SUMMER 2021 IS ON AND IN-PERSON!

GET ENROLLED
Please know that your children, their safety, and enjoyment are important to us! We have been reading and following all WA state and CDC guidelines and will revisit our camp schedule if numbers spike or new issues arise. No matter what precautions we take, we cannot guarantee kids or staff will not get sick as we have no control over summer vacations, family trips people may take prior to camp, other kid/sibling camps, what kids do after they leave camp, parents who work outside the home, etc. If you register your child for camp you are putting them into an MPA camp knowing these risks and will not hold MPA responsible. If this makes you nervous at all, please consider skipping this summer.

Refunds: You may receive a 50% refund before June 1st. We cannot offer any refunds after June 1st unless our camps are canceled. If an online option is offered in place of a canceled in-person camp and you choose not to go online, you may be refunded minus a $10 admin fee. If we must go online after camp has begun (due to illness at camp or new state/county requirements) and you choose not to you will not be refunded.

Waitlist: Putting your child’s name on the waitlist is always a good idea. Summer plans change and spots open! If our city becomes well vaccinated it may be that we can add a few more kids to our rosters. We will take from the wait list. Please do not ask us to place your child on the wait list as it will not appear in the right order when done by admin. Simply go to register and it will give you the wait list option.

At registration, you will be asked to sign a waiver with tons of information on it.
To speed up the registration process, read it ahead of time HERE so you know what you are signing
.

Important things to note:
  • Each camp is limited to 22 kids. Because of this, tuition prices may raise significantly to allow us the ability to do a full show, whereas we normally have up to 40 kids enrolled.
  • Our camps will primarily be outside with some canopies.
  • You will need hats and sunscreen! Please apply sunscreen in the morning and send them with more reapplication at lunch time. MPA can not apply sunscreen, but we will remind kids at lunch time to reapply.
  • Masks are required! This applies to all staff, students, and guardians at drop off/pickup.
  • All meals, snacks and water breaks will be outside, picnic-style in small groups in shifts for spacing. If it rains, we go under a canopy to eat. We will not allow kids to share snacks and MPA will not provide any.
  • Outside or not, kids will be reminded to wash hands frequently as well as use hand sanitizer before and after meals, snacks, specific stage work, any time we are not 6ft apart outside, etc. We will have plenty of hand sanitizer on hand!
  • Kids will have their own assigned plastic cubbies to keep their belonging in which will be stored inside.
MUSICAL THEATER INTENSIVES
The purpose of our intensive production camps is to put on a big show complete with costumes, sets and lights. This means tons of rehearsals music, scenes, and dances. We have a lot of fun at camp but putting on a show is also HARD WORK! Your child should express a strong interest in taking part in a performance. Beginning or younger students may not feel the rewards until the show/camp is over. The repetition of learning music and dance may at first be tiring and even boring. We think that is okay! Your kids will play games that stretch their imagination and bodies, and we invite everyone to step out of their comfort zones. Not only will kids learn their lines and music, but they will also learn to listen, focus, support each other and open their minds. We believe that theater is a learning experience that not only prepares them for a show, but also for life.

Show Time
  • Our stage will be outdoors, either on a stage constructed in the MPA parking lot or in a Vancouver outdoor area.
  • We hope to be taking masks off for the show. This will make it much easier to be able to hear and understand the performers. This will also be bunch better for breathing through songs and dances. We are operating under the assumption that this is what we will do but will revisit it closer to show time if it just doesn’t feel safe. The plan is for kids to clip their masks on a lanyard provided, that way they can put it on when they leave the stage without losing it or mistaking it for someone else’s. If choreography has kids moving closer together without properly distanced measures, we may decide to wear masks. If this makes you nervous, please do not register your child.
  • Our backstage area will also be outdoors and fairly large. Kids will be required to be masked backstage and all times with assigned seating.
  • No costumes or props will be shared.
  • Audiences will need to be masked and distanced.
  • Because we will have an outside stage, we may not have the ability to use lights and special effects like the past. Shows will take place during day light hours. Look at the description of each camp for show dates/times.
  • If safety for audience members is of concern, we may live stream the show instead of having a live audience. We will decide this closer to camp.

Drop off/pickup
  • This year we will have flexible drop offs and pickups. These will be outside. No parents/family members in the building, please. This includes quick bathroom visits. We will have a window of time for drop off (8:30am-8:55am) and two sign-in tables for speed (to help minimize groups congregating; family waiting to sign in should stay distanced)
  • Pick up window is 12:00-12:25 for half day camps and 3:00-3:25pm for full day camps. When waiting to sign kids out please stay distanced.
  •
What to bring to camp?
  • Sunscreen
  • Lunch and enough snacks for two scheduled breaks
  • Two faces masks each day
  • Labeled water bottle
  • Hat and layered clothing recommended

MPA will provide:
  • A lanyard for face masks
  • A camp t-shirt (Musical theater intensive camps only)
  • Assigned bin to store belongings during the day
  • Script (Musical theater intensive camps only)
  • Costume (Musical theater intensive camps only)

Students will be responsible for having appropriate under garments for under costumes, show shoes and base makeup!

3 Week Musical Theater Intensive
Wonderland: Alice’s Rock & Roll Adventure

July 5th – July 23rd | Monday-Friday
9am-3pm | Ages 8-18

Performances July 23rd (6:00pm), July 24th (12pm & 6pm), July 25th (12pm & 6pm)

How can you march to the beat of your own drummer when you're still writing the song? Everyone's search for one's authentic self is at the heart of Wonderland: Alice's Rock & Roll Adventure. Carroll's beloved, poetic tale of self-actualization is brought to life by a cast of actors/musicians who create an eclectic, live rock soundtrack as 7-1/2-year-old Alice searches for her own inner musical voice. Along the way, Alice faces challenges and fears, but she meets the ultimate test in the form of the Jabberwocky, an insidious monster made up of the dark thoughts and self-doubt that lurks inside us all. In learning to believe in the impossible, Alice learns to believe in herself. Throughout her journey, the actors surround Alice in a live musical tapestry ranging from classic rock to punk to ska and even a little bit of Bollywood. Rock concert meets live theatre as Alice reflects the vulnerabilities of all kids and then confidently finds her own inner voice.

This musical theater intensive is designed for intermediate and advanced performers! Per the nature of the show there will be a TON of dancing. Performers who also play instruments are encouraged to participate. This show will have a LIVE band! Spend three weeks immersing yourself into music, dance, and acting rehearsals. Camp ends with 5 fully staged performances on July 23rd, 24th and 25th! Daily activities include theater games, rehearsals, and opportunities to learn/help with set design, painting, props, lighting, costuming and more!

What People are Saying About MPA

"I am so impressed with Metropolitan Performing Arts! We have had such a great experience in working with them each year. Barbara Richardson has been so helpful in making sure that our daughter was getting the best of care. I also really appreciate the high quality level of costumes and props and imagination that are put into the Harry Potter LARP camps and also the performances we've seen during the years. The acting examples of the teachers and of the older students speaks well of the quality of teaching that my daughter is getting. I feel very fortunate that we have found this academy. And best of all our daughter just loves coming! We wouldn't miss it! In a day and age when money is tight, we feel it is money well spent." - Emily Ihasz

"Metropolitan Performing Arts is a wonderful performing arts school for children. The instructors are knowledgeable, encouraging, and kind. Their classes, events, and camps engage young people." - Kristin Nordberg

We found Metropolitan Performing Arts by chance when I was looking for summer activities for my daughter. She loved it and now two years later being a part of the Metro Family has been such an amazing experience for us all. She has learned so much about singing, acting & dance. The productions are phenomenal, the instructors are passionate & make classes so fun for the kids. The friendships she has made and the confidence she has gained from taking part in shows & classes in these two years are priceless. Highly recommend for anyone with kids looking to find their niche in the performing arts!" - Joanna Connelly
