Note from the Director

At its core, Footloose isn’t really about dancing. It’s about control and what happens when fear and unspoken grief shapes a community. In turn, adults, trying to protect, unintentionally silence the very people they are meant to guide and young people, not yet equipped with the language for that grief, push back the only way they know how.

Bomont is a town out of balance. The adults carry loss and the teenagers carry restriction. Somewhere in between, there is a disconnect that neither side quite knows how to bridge. What makes this story compelling is not rebellion for its own sake. It is the gradual realization that both sides are right, and both sides are wrong.

Reverend Shaw is not a villain, he is a parent trying to make sense of something senseless. Ren is not just a disruptor, he is a young person insisting that feeling something fully is not the same as losing control. Ariel, Vi, Ethel, and the rest of this community each sit somewhere along that spectrum, negotiating what it means to hold on and what it means to let go.

Our work has focused on that tension. Structure and freedom. Silence and expression. Safety and risk. The dancing, the music, the energy are not just stylistic choices - they are the language these characters use when words fail them.

This production invites us to look past the noise and the fun and sit with a harder question: What do we do with grief, and how do we make sure it does not take everything else with it?

Thank you for being here and for being part of a story that reminds us that healing only begins when we stop standing still.

Special Note from the Executive Director

Season 16 at MPA is finally here.  Our theme for this season is Change, stories of growth and exploration into self, self worth, and new beginnings.

As many of you know MPA is currently on its own journey of change as we are in the process of finding a new space.  With growth, which has been wonderful, we have found we have outgrown our current building.  We are looking to grow our programs in the future and need a new home that will help accommodate this need.

Right now we are using every room possible and even having rehearsals off site in our community as we have expanded our current programming to the limit of our capacity.  We are looking for a building to have a larger audience, additional classrooms and private lesson suites, and even a second stage that will be for our Broadway Jr., Broadway Minis, and Off-Broadway programs.

This move will take our entire community’s help in order for MPA to continue to grow and provide Southwest Washington arts education and performances for all. Once we have this beautiful new location, we will be offering tours to keep you, our audience and community, involved in the move.  Let us know if you would like to help in any way.

As always, thank you all for being a part of this beautiful organization and supporting MPA and our community in any way you can.  We would not be the theater company we are today without you.

With Gratitude, Kris Heller MS,  Executive Director
